I have been running a couple of workshops recently, for the Socially Shared Networking group, entitled ‘What’s Stopping You?’ where I have delved into the problem of ‘procrastination’. What it is, why we do it and how we can change our ways.

This is something I have suffered with for years and am now finding ways to work around this fascinating and destructive habit.

It made me think of when I procrastinated about moving jobs. The belief-structure I had created for myself stopped me from even taking a first step. I had got so used to being deeply unhappy in my job, it felt easier to stay where I was rather than try something different.

The stories I told myself went something like this …

I will never find another job that is this flexible that pays this well.
I will never find another job that will give me a car.
I will never find another job where I can get away with doing so little.
Looking for a job is painful and long-winded.
I don’t want to spend all my free time looking for another job that will end up being as bad, if not worse that this one!
I don’t really know what I want to do anyway.
I will have to retrain.
I don’t want to spend time retraining just to discover I don’t like that job either!
It will take too much time.
All jobs go through agencies, which is painful.
You could spend hours filling in application forms, and not even receive a ‘Dear John’ letter.
Better the devil you know!
These stories kept me in jobs that were sucking the energy out of me. Making me miserable and whiny. When I look back on how much time and energy I would waste on moaning about my job, boss and company, and how little I spent on getting clear on what I wanted out of life and how that would make me feel, I am shocked!

My stories kept me so stuck, I didn’t even try!

If any of this resonates with you, I urge you to beat that procrastination and take a step towards finding a role that really lights you up, pays well and makes you feel worthy and appreciated. If I knew then what I know now, my life would be very different! But now I do know, and I would love to help you gain some clarity on the direction you would like to go.
